While pursuing successful careers in “Corporate America”, Design With Consignment’s owners Lisa and Dan Gaynor dreamed about starting a business of their own. Dan’s corporate experience focused on such “left-brain” activities as developing business systems and processes, while Lisa’s background was firmly on the “right brain” side in creative marketing and public relations. Together, they knew they had they could create something really special.
For years, Lisa had spent her free time haunting antique and woodworking shops, with Dan in tow. They talked to craftsmen, dealers and collectors, learning everything possible about well-built furniture and enduring style. Shortly after their move to Austin, they knew that creating an upscale furniture consignment showroom was the business they were meant to create.
Since Design With Consignment’s opening in 2005, The Gaynors found and recruited several highly talented and experienced Austinites who share their passion for fine furnishings and top-level service. These professionals now round out the showroom’s team and give depth to the original mission–defining and living by a set of Core Values:
While Design With Consignment is not a organizationally tied to any single charity or cause, we have found many opportunities to give back to our community. As a result, we have made social responsibility a key focus of our organizational objective.
Our mission is to create and operate the finest, most reputable luxury furniture consignment shop on the planet.
Lisa B. Gaynor
Founder and CEO
During her time as a corporate marketing communications manager, Lisa Gaynor never imagined that she would be running her own retail furniture business one day. Although she traces her creative passion for home furnishings back to childhood when she manufactured Barbie furniture from old shoeboxes and fabric scraps, she had considered that part of her life “just a hobby”.
After receiving her BA in Advertising from Texas Tech University, she moved to Chicago where she enjoyed a career in sales and marketing communications; working for such notable companies as Holiday Inn, ABN AMRO Bank, and Motorola, in addition to smaller enterprises and non-profit organizations. While traveling to cross-country meetings, she began to fill her downtime by exploring local furniture consignment shops, and the seeds for Design With Consignment were sown.
After relocating to Austin in 2001 with her husband and young son, she discovered that Austin’s unique style and focus on green living made it the perfect place to establish an exceptional, high-end consignment showroom for home furnishings.
Since opening in 2005, Design With Consignment has become a favorite home furnishings resource for designers and savvy homeowners, earning millions of dollars for her local consignor clients each year. After outgrowing it’s original South Austin location, DWC moved to an elegant 10,000 sq. ft. foot showroom near 183 and Mopac in spring of 2011.
The move to the larger, more central location opened up additional opportunities for the growing business, which expanded it’s offerings to include fine rugs and original art. Another expansion followed in 2016, which allowed Ms. Gaynor the opportunity to indulge her other passion—fine estate jewelry. The new Fine Jewelry Studio covers about 1000 square feet of the store and offers complete jewelry services, including repairs, restyling, and resale.
But, Design With Consignment is not solely focused upon the needs and desires of the well-heeled bargain shopper. The organization makes substantial contributions to local charities throughout the area, such as Habitat for Humanity, Impact Austin, The Assistance League of Austin, and Texas Women in Business.
Throughout her career in the consignment and resale industry, Ms. Gaynor has brought National attention to Austin in the world of resale professionals. She has consulted with and coached several stores across the country; and has been a popular speaker at the NARTS National Resale Convention on several occasions.
During the summer of 2018, more than 30 owners of resale stores from across the US and Canada expanded their travel plans for the NARTS Convention, specifically so they could make the trip from San Antonio to Austin to visit Ms. Gaynor and tour her showroom.
Design With Consignment has received attention from local and national media outlets, becoming a feature story on CNN’s “Building Up America” series in 2008. Ms. Gaynor was named Extraordinary Woman Entrepreneur of the Year by Texas Women in Business in 2014. She enjoys writing articles on home décor, and has done many interviews and speaking engagements on subjects from quality furniture construction, to starting and running a business.
